It turns out that, after a longer period of time than they originally anticipated, Messrs. Coming up withĪn in-wall version that doesn’t require significant modifications to the wall-requiring 8-foot-tall back boxes or stud relocation, for example-seems like it would be darn near impossible. Standing subwoofer for that kind of application. After all, THX Ultra2 certification is for products that are designed to be used in large home theater rooms, typically around 3,000 cubic feet with a viewing distance of approximately 12 feet. When I first heard that Igor was working with Laurie Fincham (THX’s chief scientist and VP of research and development) on a project to develop the world’s first THX Ultra2–certified in-wall subwoofer, I thought maybe he’d been swigging from one of those vodka bottles that were meant for me. Hopefully, this public airing will make Igor feel like he has to maintain the tradition. So now you know, and I can state categorically that neither the gifting nor the drinking had any influence on my ultimate impression of the system. He took college in Russia.) So when Igor came to my house to set up and tweak BG Radia’s BGX-4850 in-wall subwoofer system ($6,995 as tested), he did not disappoint. (We have something of a Russian connection. It’s become a tradition that Igor Levitsky, BG Radia’s VP of engineering and research, presents me with a bottle of Russian vodka the one or two times a year we have the chance to meet. I bring this up as a way of full disclosure. Vodka, after all, isn’t a room treatment product-although enough (empty) bottles spread throughout the room might be just the thing. However, it still can’t change a subwoofer’s performance. It might even make suggestible friends agree if you pass the bottle around the room. But it can make me think I sound better (smarter, and of course funnier). Easy to install in existing construction Ī bottle of vodka can’t make a speaker sound any better than it actually does.is their website.Price: $6,995 At A Glance: THX Ultra2 certified I turn them on at a low/medium level all day long. Double what the manual says IMO (100 hours). But, you WILL need a subwoofer to enjoy these with any kind of music. These speakers, from the smallest set to the flagship model, don't have an ounce of bass. Also, you will hear everyone say that they will need a powered sub. If you plan to krank them, they will need a 4 ohm stable load at a minimum to avoid shutting down your receiver. True for every speaker that better equipment will make them sound better, but they will run on standard receivers. Some will say they require expensive equipment to sound good. Bohlender Graebener speakers come standard with a LIFETIME warranty. Magnepans and ML speakers are much more fragile. Martin Logan's are said to be good but only for softer music. All their speakers are way under rated and under priced IMO. Just bought a set of Radia 520's yesterday believe it or not. I've owned 3 sets of BG Radia speakers from Bohlender Graebener. I always recomend a sub but BG is particualrly weak on the low end. You need to budget in a sub when going with BG. I always know what my customer is getting when I recommend BG. They stand behind their products with a lifetime warranty and offer strong customer support. They offer a unique sound that is very forgiving to your room and seating arrangement. Why do I carry them? Sound wise I prefer them over the other planar brands out there. there's not a lot of margin compared to other more traditional brands and BG's demo discount program is one of the worst I've ever seen (they are working on this by the way). IMO the reason that a lot of dealers don't carry them. There aren't a lot of dealers out there so it may be hard to demo a wide variety of their models. They look great, sound great, and are unique. Of course, the more power the better !Īs far as to "what most people are saying" I'd like to see how many "most people" have actually heard and listened to BG's high end products. A $1000 receiver should provide enough power to even their top models. They aren't thirsty for power and are fine with an 8 ohm receiver. Some of their higher end models are amazing because they virtually have no sweet spot at all. I am a BG dealer and thus am very familiar with their products.
